Summary
The EURACHEM/CITAC Measurement Uncertainty and Traceability Working Group promoted a workshop on “Recent Developments in Measurement Uncertainty” held in the Science Museum of the University of Lisbon in 6 and 7 June 2011. This event was organized by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and the Portuguese Association of Accredited Laboratories (RELACRE). The program of the workshop was divided into five sessions, namely: “Measurement Uncertainty”, “Practical evaluation of Measurement Uncertainty”, “Compliance and Traceability”, “Numerical methods” and “Future Directions”. This was a very successful event, which included the presentation and discussion of the draft version of the 3rd edition of the EURACHEM/CITAC guide “Quantifying Uncertainty in Analytical measurement” that celebrated its 16th anniversary. 86 participants from 26 countries attended. All had the chance of presenting their most recent work on the evaluation of the measurement uncertainty, either orally or in posters. Seven invited lectures, eleven oral communications and 29 posters were presented in the meeting. All of these stimulated lively discussions and it was encouraging to see the application of the evaluation of measurement uncertainty to such a wide range of analytical measurements. Two pairs of parallel breakout sessions on “Compliance” and “Traceability”, and “Numerical Methods” and “Uncertainty and detection limits” allowed some longer discussion between participants about these key issues.
The book of abstracts, some communication from participants and the report of breakout sessions are available on the workshop website. The Journal of Accreditation and Quality Assurance (ACQUAL) will publish a topical issue with full papers from works presented in the workshop.
